Menus

Can customers see a meal's full description without leaving the menu?

Yes, once you turn it on. With 'Let customers open full meal details' enabled in Menus → Settings → Menu layout, clicking a meal's photo or its name opens that product's full Shopify description in a popup, together with the meal's nutrition, tags and allergens — and customers can add the meal from inside the popup, so they never lose their place in the order.

Steps

  1. Read through your product descriptions in Shopify first. The popup shows each one in full, so anything in there — shipping notes, storage instructions, marketing copy — is what customers will see while they choose their meals.
  2. Open Menus → Settings and turn on 'Let customers open full meal details' under Menu layout. Save.
  3. Wait up to one minute for the storefront cache to refresh, then open your menu page and click a meal's photo.

Frequently asked questions

Is it on by default?

No. It is off until you turn it on, so nothing about your menu page changes on its own. Once it is on, the popup uses the product description you already have in Shopify and updates automatically whenever you edit that product — there is no separate field to fill in and no metafield to map.

Is there a button that says 'View details'?

No — the meal's photo and its name are the buttons. On a desktop the photo lifts slightly and the name underlines when the customer hovers over it.

Does my formatting carry over?

Headings, bold text, bullet lists, tables and images from your product description are all kept. Scripts, videos and embedded widgets are removed — the popup is for reading the meal's information, so anything that would run code on your storefront is stripped out.

Can a customer choose the meal from the popup?

Yes. The same Add / quantity controls from the card sit at the bottom of the popup, including the size or flavour options if the meal has them. The popup stays open, so a customer can read, add, and close.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. On a phone the popup fills the screen and scrolls, with a close button in the top corner.

A meal's photo isn't clickable

Either 'Let customers open full meal details' is still off in Menus → Settings → Menu layout, or that particular meal has no description in Shopify. A meal with an empty description is never clickable, so a customer is never shown an empty popup — fill in the description and it becomes clickable on its own.
