How should I set up my meal plan product?
The app uses one Shopify product as the subscription product. Its variants represent the customer's plan choices, such as servings and meals per week.
Steps
- In Shopify admin, create or choose a product for your meal kit subscription.
- Add variant options that fit your box. Name them however you like — for example Number of servings and Meals per week, or Days and Pax. The app does not control these labels; your theme shows them.
- Set the price on each variant. That variant price becomes the plan price customers see.
- In the app, open Meal plans and select the product.
- For each variant, set Max meals selectable — how many recipes a shopper may pick for that variant. If your variants have a second option (for example servings × meals, such as '2 / 4'), a People / servings field also appears; it is optional and defaults to 1. Single-option plans (for example '6 days plan') have no servings concept, so that field is hidden.
- Use Auto-fill from variant options to prefill the numbers from your variant names, then correct any that are wrong.
- Save the meal plan so the app can create or reconnect Shopify subscription purchase options.
Frequently asked questions
Can the app create the meal plan product for me?
Yes. On Getting Started, choose 'No — create one for me'. The app asks for your plan sizes, prices, and (for meal kits) household sizes, then creates the product with matching variants and fills in the selection caps exactly — no Auto-fill needed. The steps below are for connecting a product you already have.
Why can't I add my meal plan product to a menu?
The meal plan product is what customers buy — its variant price is the subscription charge. Menus should contain the individual dishes customers pick from. If the plan product were inside a menu, customers would see it as a selectable 'meal' at the full plan price, so the app filters it out when you add menu products and warns you if an older menu still contains it.
Why do variants matter?
Each variant represents a sellable plan option. For example, 2 servings / 3 meals per week can have a different price from 4 servings / 4 meals per week.
What is Max meals selectable?
It is the number of recipes a shopper can choose in the box for that variant — the cap the storefront menu enforces. Set it explicitly because a variant's name is not always the meal count. For example a '6 Days' variant where shoppers eat 2 meals a day means Max meals selectable is 12, not 6.
What happens if a customer picks fewer meals than the cap?
A started-but-unfinished week can't be checked out or saved: the plan price is fixed, so a short selection would mean paying full price for fewer meals. The menu shows a selected/total counter for each week (and each section, if you use sections), unfinished week tabs are marked, and pressing Checkout lists exactly which weeks still need meals. Leaving a week completely empty is fine — the app fills it automatically at renewal based on the customer's previous picks. If a menu offers fewer dishes than the cap, customers only need to pick what the menu offers. Paid add-on sections are optional and never block checkout.
How is Max meals selectable split when a week has two menus (Tue-Thu + Fri-Mon)?
Max meals selectable is the cap for the whole package, not for each menu period. When the rotation uses the Tue-Thu + Fri-Mon period structure, the app divides that cap across the two blocks by their number of days (2 meals per day), filling the earlier block first. For example a 5-day package (cap 10) allows 6 meals in Tue-Thu (3 days) and 4 in Fri-Mon (the remaining 2 days); a 7-day package (cap 14) allows 6 and 8. Packages longer than a week (for example a 28-day package) fill across several weeks until the cap is reached, then repeat. With the Whole week structure each week simply gets the cap.
Do I have to use 'servings' as a label?
No. The app only stores numbers (the cap and an optional people/servings count). The wording shoppers see — servings, people, Pax, Days, and so on — comes from the variant option names you create in Shopify.
When does the People / servings field appear?
Only when you turn on Servings — the 'Each recipe serves more than one person' toggle on the Meal plans page. Turn it on if each selected recipe feeds multiple people (for example a meal kit where one recipe serves 2 or 4). When it is off (the default), each recipe is treated as a single serving and the People / servings field is hidden. This is now an explicit choice rather than something guessed from your variant options, so multi-option products (for example meals per day, snacks, and package length) no longer show servings unless you actually use it.
Where do servings show up for the customer?
For plans with servings, each chosen recipe shows its serving count at checkout (for example '2 servings on 06/22/2026'), and in the customer portal each meal card shows the serving count as meta text (for example '2 servings'). For single-option plans with no servings, the serving label is omitted — recipes show just the date at checkout, and if a recipe is chosen more than once the portal meal card shows '×2'.
Can I change the product later?
Yes. Open Meal plans, choose Change product, then save. After changing the product, preview the product page to confirm the widget and purchase option still appear.
If I edit a product's title, description, or image later, do my menus update?
Yes. When you edit a product in Shopify, the app automatically refreshes that product's title, description, and image everywhere it appears in your weekly menus and menu templates. This is useful when you first build a menu and add the photo or description afterwards. Prices and variants are not changed by this sync — they stay as set when the product was added to the menu.
How do I choose between subscription and one-time purchase?
On the Meal plans page, under Purchase options, pick one: 'Subscription only' (shoppers must subscribe), 'Subscription and one-time purchase' (both options show in your store), or 'One-time purchase only (no subscription)'. Save to apply. Your product, variants, and Max meals selectable caps are unchanged whichever option you pick.
How do I turn off subscriptions and only sell one-time?
Open Meal plans, set Purchase options to 'One-time purchase only (no subscription)', and save. The app removes the product from its selling plan group, so the subscription option disappears from the product page in your store and shoppers buy once. The selling plan group is kept, so switching back to 'Subscription only' or 'Subscription and one-time purchase' simply re-adds the product. Existing subscriptions customers already have are not affected.
